Gert graduated from Shell Rock High School then moved to Waverly and became a telephone operator. After her first day at work, she went home and cried because she wasn’t sure she could do it. But after a few days, she was a master at the job. While she was in Waverly, she met Donald Richard Wilken and their first date was at the skating rink, which they both loved. On September 26, 1954, Gert and Don were married at the Methodist Church in Waverly. After their marriage, they lived in Clarksville and ran Wilken Grocery on Main Street. Gert and Don then moved to Dumont, Iowa, where Don worked at the grocery store and Gert worked at the Dumont Care Center. She loved her job and had a big smile for everyone she cared for. Don passed away in 2004. In 2007, Gert moved back to Clarksville to the town she knew and loved. Gertrude was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. She led a full life and everyone always had a laugh or two when talking to her. She loved to play cards, meet new people, visit with friends and show everyone through the home she was living in. Gert kept her family’s life history year by year and also wrote daily in her diary. She filled a pretty large box of diaries that her kids have enjoyed reading through and remembering the funny things through the years. Gert was a true friend and caregiver throughout her life. She enjoyed her grandkids and great-grandkids and would especially love to receive letters and photos of what they were up to. Of all our memories of Gert, she was always a true wife, sister, aunt and friend, but especially a deeply caring mom. Gertrude died Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at Clarksville Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville. She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Donald on June 4, 2004; her parents; and two brothers, Harold and Russell Willson. Gertrude is survived two children, Beverly (Drake) Tarpley of St. Joseph, Missouri and David (Shari) Wilken of Clarksville; six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Geraldine Ruth of Clarksville, Florence Williams of Colorado and Verna Barton of Washington. A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday August 3, 2019, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville with a light lunch before the service from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Immanuel United Church of Christ or Cedar Valley Hospice.
