She died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center in Scribner. Gertrude Steinke was born April 29, 1909, in Wisner. Her family moved to Hooper for a short time when she was a child and then relocated to Wis. and Minn. She attended school in Windom, Minn. As a young homemaker and widow in 1954, she raised her six children under the age of 12 by farming on the original Roemer homestead southwest of Scribner. She remained on the farm until 1980 when she moved to a home in Scribner. She married Otto T. Roemer on Aug. 12, 1942, at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dakota City, Neb. The couple moved to Scribner in 1942 and lived on the farm until 1980. She lived in her own home until she became one of the first residents of Elkhorn Valley Assisted Living Center in Scribner in May 2002. She moved to Good Samaritan Center in Dec. 2003. Her spouse preceded her in death on Aug. 24, 1954. She was a member of St. John's Ridgeley Lutheran Church in rural Scribner for over 60 years and was active in the Ladies Aide for many years. Survivors include: four sons, Otto (and wife, Denise) Roemer, Rodney (and wife, Sandy), all of Scribner, Gerald (and wife, Jean Ann) Roemer of Hooper, and Martin (and wife, Janice) Roemer of Casa Grande, Ariz.; two daughters, Donna (Mrs. Robert) Robinson of Imperial Beach, Calif. and Bonnie (Mrs. Jim) Henshaw of Lincoln; a brother, Bernard (and wife, Charolotte) Steinke of Fremont: 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. ntbl She was also preceded in death by eight brothers, four sisters and a grandson. The Rev. Nicki McIntyre will officiate Monday's service. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. Sunday at Spear-Johnson Funeral Home in Scribner. Burial will be in St. John's Ridgeley Cemetery in Scribner. Memorials have been established to Good Samaritan Center, Elkhorn Valley Villa, or St. John's Ridgeley Lutheran Church. Spear-Johnson Funeral Home in Scribner is in charge of arrangements.
