She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; an infant daughter, Glenda; and three brothers, Wayne, Bernard and Glen Thompson. Gertrude B. Thompson was born Aug. 28, 1912, near Buck Creek, Iowa. She was the daughter of Glenn and Edna Saunders Thompson. Gertrude attended rural schools and then graduated from the Buck Creek High School in 1929. She completed her education at Lenox College in Hopkinton. Gertrude then taught at the Viola, Iowa, school for several years. Gertrude B. Thompson and Paul M. Green were married June 5, 1935, at the Buck Creek Methodist parsonage. The couple made their home in Hopkinton where Gertrude returned to teaching after raising her family. She taught at Buck Creek and Hopkinton and later at Maquoketa Valley for 29 years. She retired from teaching in 1977 and then was a substitute teacher for 10 years. Paul preceded her in death on July 16, 1993. In 1995, Gertrude moved to West Branch, where she attended the Springdale United Methodist Church. For 84 years, Gertrude had been a member of the Buck Creek United Methodist Church, where she was active in the UMW, a Sunday School teacher, and worked with the Head Start program.
