Description	:	Gertrude Vande Voort was the youngest of six children born to Peter and Anna (Stursma) Bandstra on March 25, 1925, near Pella, Iowa. She began her education at a country school in the Sandridge vicinity. When her family moved to the Harvey, Iowa, area she attended Iola Country School, graduating from the eighth grade. She then stayed home to help her mother care for their busy family on the farm. Read More	Gertrude Vande Voort was the youngest of six children born to Peter and Anna (Stursma) Bandstra on March 25, 1925, near Pella, Iowa. She began her education at a country school in the Sandridge vicinity. When her family moved to the Harvey, Iowa, area she attended Iola Country School, graduating from the eighth grade. She then stayed home to help her mother care for their busy family on the farm. She met Henry John Vande Voort from Leighton, Iowa, through their churches’ Young People’s societies and they were married on November 27, 1944, at the church parsonage in Pella. Shortly thereafter Henry left for the Navy during World War II and she lived with her parents while he was deployed. During that time their daughter Linda Ann was born. When Henry was discharged from the service in April, 1946, they established their own home and were blessed with three more children: Janice Ilene, Debra Sue and Douglas Jay. They first rented a farm northwest of Pella and then moved to a farm south of Pella. In 1952 they moved to a farm southeast of Peoria in rural New Sharon. They purchased that farm at an auction in 1954, and lived and worked there until moving to Pella during semi-retirement in 1989. In November of 2013 they became residents of Vriendschaap Village, and Henry passed away in April, 2014. Gertrude moved to The Cottages in January, 2017, where God called her home on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at the age of 93 years. Gertrude’s faith was an integral part of her life. She was baptized as an infant and made profession of faith at Second Christian Reformed Church of Pella in 1944. She and Henry were faithful members of Peoria Christian Reformed Church for many years, where she attended the Queen Esther and Persis ladies societies. She quietly served as a Bible study correspondent with Crossroads Prison Ministry for several years. Gertrude was the quintessential farmwife who found fulfillment in caring for her family, keeping a clean house and sparkling windows, mending worn clothing, and tending her flowers. She made and served many meals around her kitchen table, and when they moved to town she missed having the men come in for morning and afternoon coffeetimes. She had a great sense of humor and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. In March 2018 she became a great-great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Anna Bandstra, all of her siblings and their spouses: Paul P. and Bertha Bandstra, Tena and John Westerkamp, William and Dirkie Bandstra, Gilbert and Joyce Bandstra, Raymond and Grace Bandstra; her parents-in-law William and Grace (Schimmel) Vande Voort, and a brother-in-law, Gary Vande Voort. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 10:30 am,Peoria Christian Reformed Church, Peoria, Iowa. Visitation will begin Sunday morning at Van Dyk- Duven Funeral Home in Pella where the family will be present from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.
