Vande Griend, jr., Jake B. Vande Griend, Clarence Cleveringa, Elmer Vander Zwaag and John A. Boer. Mrs. Van Berkum died last Friday morning, May 21, 1954, at the Methodist hospital in Sioux City, where she had been confined for most of the seven weeks of her brief illness. Death came as the result of a quick-spreading cancer. Mrs. Van Berkum was 36 years of age at the time of her death, having been born December 23, 1917 to Dick J. De Cook and Mae (Muilenburg) De Cook. On January 23, 1939, she married Alvin Van Berkum; to this union three children were born. One child, Mary Ann, born January 3, 1940, died when 19 months old. Mrs. Van Berkum lived all of her life on the same farm on which she was living with her husband and children at the the time of her death. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dick De Cook, lived there when she was born and until she married. Surviving relatives include the widower, two children, Douglas and Glenda; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dick J. De Cook of Orange City; a sister, Geraldine (Mrs. Stephen) Ekdom of Ireton; and a grandfather, Mr. J. P. Muilenburg of Hull. One sister, who died in infancy, preceded her in death. Mrs. Van Berkum was active in the ladies aid and the Missionary society groups of the Free Grace Reformed church at Middleburg prior to her fatal illness. Sioux County Capital 1954-05-27.
