Gertrude Claassen, 95 years of age, of Beatrice, NE. passed away at the Parkview Center in Beatrice Sunday morning, September 2, 2007. She was born March 4, 1912 just west of Beatrice , Nebraska to Jacob Peter and Helen (Goossen) Claassen.Gertrudes mother, Helen, passed away when Gertrude was eleven days old.Her father, Jacob, married Margarete Goossen on December 11,1913. Gertrude Claassen, 95 years of age, of Beatrice, NE. passed away at the Parkview Center in Beatrice Sunday morning, September 2, 2007. She was born March 4, 1912 just west of Beatrice , Nebraska to Jacob Peter and Helen (Goossen) Claassen.Gertrudes mother, Helen, passed away when Gertrude was eleven days old.Her father, Jacob, married Margarete Goossen on December 11,1913. She began school in 1918 at the Lonesome Ridge School.A year later the family moved to a farm two miles north of Ellis, NE. and she attended Sparks school through the 8th grade.The following two years she attended the Mennonite Bible Academy next to First Mennonite Church . She regularly attended First Mennonite Church her entire life, following the work of and supporting the General Conference and especially its missionaries was important to her.She was active with the Ladies Mission Circle. From 1957-1958, she worked at the Mennonite Deaconess Hospital in Beatrice. She moved into Beatrice from the farm west of Beatrice in 1989. Family was a priority in Gertrudes life, along with cooking, baking and gardening.She prepared countless Sunday dinners for the local family, and sharing her scrapbooks and photo albums brought the comfort of good memories to her. She is survived by sister-in-law Katie (Mrs. Fred) Claassen; nieces and nephews: Gilbert Hamm, Evelyn (Claassen) Brown and husband Wallace, Timothy Claassen, Samuel Claassen and wife Barbara, Marjorie (Claassen) Warkentine and husband Kendal, a number of great-nieces and nephews and one great-great niece.Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents Jacob and Helen (Goossen)Claassen; step mother Margarete (Goossen) Claassen; brothers Fred, Robert, and Arnold Claassen, sister Margaret (Claassen) Hamm , brother-in-law John Hamm and sister-in-law Anna Margret (Mrs. Arnold) Claassen. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at the First Mennonite Church, R. Beatrice, NE. with Reverend Weldon Schloneger officiating. Interment will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Mennonite Cemetery, R. Beatrice, NE. The body will lie in state Tuesday from 11-9:00 and not at the church. The family will greet friends at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice Tuesday from 6:30-8:00. A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 A.M. Wednesday at the church. A memorial has been established to the Mennonite Central Committee with Bill Goossen and Louis Goossen in charge. Messages of condolence may be sent to [email protected] They will be forwarded to the family. The Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice is in charge of services.
