Description	:	Gertrude (aka Gertie) and her siblings were born near Cumberland, Cass County, Iowa, and were raised on farms in Edna Township and Lincoln Township in nearby Adams County. The Young family (except daughter Sylvia Irene) moved to South Dakota about 1916. Gertrude's grandmother, Diana (Backus) Goudy died in McCook County soon after arriving with the family. The Young family (except daughter Sylvia Irene) moved to South Dakota about 1916. Gertrude's grandmother, Diana (Backus) Goudy died in McCook County soon after arriving with the family. Gertrude's father, James Young, died in 1918 and her mother, Rey Sylvia (Goudy) Young died in 1919, both in Sanborn County. All three were buried in Cass County, Iowa. The Young family may have migrated to South Dakota because Rey Sylvia's sister, Sadie Olive (Goudy) Dougherty, and her brother, James Theodore Goudy, had settled there earlier. James Goudy's daughter, Sarah "Sadie" Margaret Goudy, had married Charles Melvin Bunce, a brother of William Avery "Will" Bunce, the person Gertrude married in 1920. (Gertrude and Sadie were cousins.) After Will's death in 1929, Gertie remained in Artesian, Sanborn County, while her daughter, Maxine, was attending school. Gertie's brothers, Hallie and Rize, had been farming together in Ravenna Township, just south of Artesian. In the early 1940s, all three left South Dakota and moved to Clinton County, Iowa. Perhaps the years of drought, dust storms, the depression, and the start of the war contributed to their decision to leave South Dakota. Gertrude remained in Clinton until her death on June 27, 1957. Her obituary in the Clinton Herald reports "....Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home, with Rev. Bruce McCullough of the First Presbyterian church officiating. Burial will be in Springdale cemetery. Gertrude Young was born Aug. 13, 1888, in Cumberland, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Young. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Bervin (Maxine) Dixon of Clinton; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Damon Clark and Mrs. Victor Bricker of Mitchell, S. D.; five [four] stepsons, Ray, Glenn and Bennie of Oregon, and Guy of Oakland, Calf. Mrs., Bunce was preceded in death by her husband and her parents."
