Description	:	Gertrude Dorothy Barnes, eldest daughter of Geraldine and Joseph Daniel Barnes was born July 27, 1921 in Mauston, Wisconsin. She attended school in New Lisbon, Wisconsin and graduated from New Lisbon High School in 1939. In 1943 she enlisted in the Women's Army Corpse She served with the 400th ASF Band as a trumpeter. She received her honorable discharge in November of 1945. On September 29, 1945 Gertrude Barnes was united in marriage with Kenneth Kinney while both were in service at Fort Des Moines. After their discharges they came to Newell, where they since have made their home, and engaged in farming. To this marriage were born two daughters, Sandra (Mrs. G. Kent Renegar) and Candace (Mrs. Nelson Chesney). Gertrude, known as Trudy by those who knew and loved her, was active in community affairs and was a member of the First Congregational Church. She was greatly concerned and interested in young people and gave special consideration to them. Trudy was always eager and willing to lend a helping hand to everyone. In 1967 she enrolled at Buena Vista College and graduated with honors in 1970 receiving a B. A. degree in sociology. Upon graduation she was employed by the Pocahontas County Welfare Department until the time of her illness. She is survived by her husband Kenneth, daughters Mrs. Sandra Renegar of Lincoln, Nebraska and Mrs. Candace Chesney of Iowa City; her mother, Mrs. Geraldine Barnes of Stoutland, Missouri; one brother, Gerald E. Barnes of Fairfax, Virginia; five sisters, Mrs. Marie Hunter of Stoutland, Missouri, Mrs. Francis M. Goecke of Monroe, Wisconsin, Mrs. June Ford of Phoenix, Arizona, Mrs. Margaret Smith of Richland, Missouri and Mrs. Peggy Whelan of Park Forest, Illinois, and two sons-in-law, Kent Renegar and Nelson Chesney. She was preceded in death by her father and three brothers.
