The Funeral Mass for Gertrude and her sister, Mary Arbach Hoven, will be Saturday, December 23, 2006 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Hoven, with Father Lance Oser, celebrant. Read More	Gertrude Arbach, 89, Hoven, SD died Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at the Holy Infant Hospital, Hoven. Gertrude Elizabeth Duenwald, daughter of Rose E. (Rausch) and Fred Duenwald, was born at the farm of her grandparents, the John Duenwald, Sr.'s. SW of Hoven on December 18, 1917. At age two she moved with her family to a farm NW of Hoven. She attended Swan Lake Rural School NW of Hoven for four years and then attended St. Anthony's Parochial School in Hoven for four years. She attended high school in Lebanon, SD graduating with the LHS Class of 1938. She then attended Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, SD for 1 year, earning her teaching certificate. She taught at the Swan Creek Rural School for four years. On November 18, 1942 she married Frank Arbach at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hoven with Monsignor Anthony Helmbrecht conducting the wedding. The newlyweds first lived on the Harry Hein farm NW of Hoven. In 1949 they purchased the Pete Dreis farm 4 miles N and 1 mile W of Hoven. They lived and farmed there until 1975 when they moved into Hoven. This is where Gertrude lived the remainder of her life. Since October 2002, she was a resident of Holy Infant Hospital. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, National Catholic Society of Foresters, and St. Anthony's Altar Society, both of which she served as an officer. She also had been an active member of the Hoven Senior Citizens and the Hoven Country Club. Gertrude loved the outdoors and gardening. She also enjoyed sports and over the years had participated in basketball, golf, softball, and bowling. She also enjoyed doing crafts. Her athletic ability earned her a gold medal for horseshoe pitching at the Senior Olympics in Pierre. Gertrude is survived by 1 son-Denis (Marge) Arbach of Hoven; 3 daughters-Janet (John) Krier of Woodburn, OR, Patricia (Cliff) Simon of Hoven, and Evelyn (Larry) Carlson of Sioux Falls, SD; 3 sisters-Delores Rogers of Bandera, tX, Dorothy (Fred) Frost of Watertown,SD and Roselyn (Ray) Kaup of Hoven; 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents,her husband on June 7, 1996, 1 son (Harlan), 1 grandson (Rick Arbach), 2 sisters, and 5 brothers. Honorary bearers will be the Holy Infant Hospital Staff. Casketbearers will be Jeanne Silsby of Albany, OR., Jeff Krier of Eugene, OR., Terry Simon of Aberdeen, Scott Simon of Watertown, Shelly Geist of Rapid City, SD Tom Arbach of Piedmont, SD Denise Simon of Brookings, SD Nichole Thies of Virginia Beach, VA., Jodi Carlson of Sioux Falls. The Arbach family prefers memorials to St. Anthony's Church Restoration Fund, PO Box 98, Hoven, SD 57450 or to "We Care" C/O Holy Infant Hospital, PO Box 158, Hoven, SD 57450. Miller Funeral Home, Bowdle, is in charge of arrangements.
