Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Whittemore. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements. Visitation is after 2 p.m. today, Thursday, March 5. Ms. Farrell died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at the Emmetsburg Care Center. She was 85. Gertrude Ellen Farrell was born Dec. 3, 1912, in Whittemore, the daughter of Michael Francis (Frank) and Julia C. (Korleski) Farrell. She graduated from Presentation Academy in Whittemore in 1930, then continued her education at St. Joseph's School of Nursing in St. Paul, Minn., where she graduated May 12, 1934. Gertie Farrell had made her home in Emmetsburg since the 1940s. She had worked as a nurse in Milwaukee, then moved to Emmetsburg where she worked as a private duty nurse. She was the nurse for Emmetsburg Community School for 19 years, retiring in 1977. Ms. Farrell was a member of Holy Family Parish and Catholic Daughters of America. She was a 50-year member of Fortnightly Club, and a member of Retired Teachers Club and Retired Nurses. Survivors include nieces and a nephew who moved to Gertie's home in 1953; Barbara Schilling of Waterloo, Craig Farrell of Hilo, Hawaii, and Margene Clayton of Waterloo; and other relatives. Ms. Farrell was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Bernice Farrell and two infant sisters; and brothers, Tom, Pat, Willis (Chuck) and Lloyd.
