Born September 8, 1930, to John and Emilie Otten on the family farm in Stanton County, Nebraska, she was the third child of what would soon be ten. Born September 8, 1930, to John and Emilie Otten on the family farm in Stanton County, Nebraska, she was the third child of what would soon be ten. She was baptized into Christ and confirmed her Christian faith at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in rural Wisner. Growing up on the farm and being the eldest daughter, she always looked out for her siblings, even making sure they had gifts at Christmas. After graduating from Pilger High School in 1948, she attended Business College in Lincoln and worked as a secretary there for several years. She met Melvin through her sister, Ruth, while living there but didn’t meet up with him again until moving to Spokane, Washington. Mel, a good Lutheran Nebraska boy gone west, was attending the University of Idaho. They were married in Spokane in October of 1956 and moved to Moscow, Idaho. Their first daughter, Ann, was born the next year. After graduation, Mel’s first job with the BLM moved them to Boise where their son, Kenneth, was born in 1959. Mel’s federal job then took them to Fairbanks, Alaska, and their second daughter, Janet, was born in 1962. Gertie became proficient at packing, moving and adjusting as Mel’s job took them around the country. Over their lives they would also live in Springfield, Virginia; Boise (again); Ukiah, California; Canon City, Colorado; Eugene, Oregon; Boise (again!); Portland, Oregon; Greeley, Colorado; and finally, Boise once more, in 2012. Gert’s true vocation was being a mother and homemaker, filling her family’s life with stability and peace but also enjoying many adventures and fun including family camping trips, travels and excursions. She loved the beauty in life and always made sure that her home, yard and even herself were always elegantly presentable. She remained close with her many siblings through the years, and the family often traveled back to Nebraska during the summer for time at “the Home Place.” Many stories of her wit, good cheer, and her child wrangling capacity are held in the hearts of her numerous nieces and nephews. Gert was very active in the Lutheran church wherever they lived, serving as a leader in the women’s groups and in Bible studies. She knew the greatest gift she could give her children was teaching the Christian faith and modeling her love for Jesus. She was known by many as a gracious, humble, generous, and patient woman, always ready to give to anyone who had a need, either family or charity. She expressed kindness and thoughtfulness toward others with unexpected and surprising gifts whenever she visited. Of course, these were invariably purchased at a brag-worthy discount if they were not lovingly made from scratch. To her children, she was the one who was always there and always available. Her love was evident through all their passages of life. To her grandchildren she was many things: a confidant, a great encourager, and a role model. She kept tabs on everyone, always wanting to hear the latest news. Gert leaves Mel, her husband of 60 years, daughter, Ann, and Mark Halvorson; daughter of her heart, Wendy Clausen; daughter, Janet, and Dana Brooks; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who all look forward to their heavenly reunion. She is already reunited with her son Ken, who died last year, two brothers and a sister and all the family and saints that have gone before and are now in the presence of Christ our Savior. A Memorial service and celebration of life will be held at Friendship Celebration Lutheran Church, Meridian, Idaho, on Thursday, March 30, at 11 AM. She will be laid to rest with four generations of family in St. Matthew’s cemetery in rural Nebraska, awaiting the resurrection upon Jesus’ return. The family requests in lieu of flowers, that memorials may be sent in honor of her to Camp Perkins Lutheran Outdoor Ministries located near Stanley, Idaho.
