Born Gerta Frieda Schuurmann on March 22, 1904, in Campen, Germany, she attended school in Germany and moved with her family to Emden, Minnesota, in 1912. In 1915 she moved to Ireton and in 1918 to Clara City, Minnesota, where she graduated from eighth grade. She attended the last three years of high school in Grundy Center Christian High School. She taught school in Highland, Indiana; Denver, Colorado; and Middleburg. On August 21, 1930, she married Henry John Wissink in Middleburg. The couple farmed near Middleburg for 33 years and moved to Boyden in 1963. He died July 8, 1987. She was a member of Boyden First Reformed Church. Survivors include three daughters, Bernice Mulder and Florence Kroese, both of Hull, and Gladys Link of Sioux Falls; two sons, Dr. John of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Sherman of Sioux Center; two sisters, Augusta Kok of Lynden, Washington, and Freda Bloemendaal of Orange City; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
