Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, with her niece, the Rev. Kathleen Dettmann officiating. Gertie was born to Fred and Katharina (Voegele) Flemmer on Dec. 20, 1922. She was born by midwife and emergency baptized by her uncle on the Flemmer Homestead. When she was a year old, her family moved into town and started Northern Produce Creamery, which eventually became a grocery store. Gertie acquired a taste for business early. Not only did the family live behind the store until Gertie was 12, she helped her father with bills and other bookkeeping chores. Her sister, Ottilde “Tillie” was born July 22, 1926, and they remained best friends for the rest of their lives. Gertie was confirmed in German and English on April 5, 1936, at Zion Lutheran Church by the Rev. S. Joachim. She was very active in high school as a drum majorette, cheerleader, class officer, trombone player and Luther League member. After high school, she attended Concordia College in Morehead, Minn., but the future course of her life had already been set when she met DuWayne (Bud) Buscher when they were high school seniors. He was the love of her life. They were married Aug. 23, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church. During WWII, Bud was in the Merchant Marines and Gertie moved to New York City in 1943, to be closer to him. She did the shipping assignments for the Merchant Marines while in New York. Gertie moved back to Beulah when she was pregnant and Bud was shipped out. A daughter, Mary Katherine, was born on Oct. 29, 1944. Bud returned from the war in April, 1945. Gertie and Bud built a house in Beulah and Bud worked at Flemmer Sales and Service and the Corner Hardware with Gertie’s father. Another daughter, Lindarae, was born May 9, 1950. In 1952, the family moved to Thermopolis, Wyo., to open the Rainbow Court Motel. Ray and Virginia Coleman worked for them and became lifelong friends. In 1958, Bud became a realtor in Billings, Mont. Bud died on Feb. 5, 1959. Gertie moved to Bismarck in May, 1959. She attended Bismarck Junior College. She worked for Dakota Reproduction, a blueprinting firm, before opening Hobbies Unlimited in 1960. In 1966, her father Fred Flemmer and brother-in-law, Doug Dettmann, invited her to buy into the Bank of Beulah. She really enjoyed working in the bank and served as vice president for 33 years. She retired on April 30, 1999, but remained on the bank’s board of directors. Gertie enjoyed traveling, supervising the care of her yard and garden (and other things), and spent many hours with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, holding office several times, and a member of Mother’s Club, the Mercer County Historical Society, Beulah Boosters, Beulah High School Alumni Committee, North Dakota Bankers Association and National Association of Bank Women, who named her “Bank Woman of the Year.” She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Kay (Paul) Weinberger, Turtle Lake, and Lindarae Eisenbeis, Beulah; her grandchildren, Brian (Linda) Bjorklund, Medina, Ohio, Michelle (Lawrence) Anderson, Beulah, Barry (Kelly) Bjorklund, Bismarck, Troy (Desira) Eisenbeis, Bismarck, Corey (Keila) Eisenbeis, Mandan, and Aaron Eisenbeis, Beulah; her great-grandchildren, Coltyn, Jordyn, Taylor Anderson, Beulah, Jaylei Eisenbeis, Mandan, and Eyan Eisenbeis, Bismarck; her sister, Tillie Dettmann, Beulah; her sister-in-law, Lynn Buscher, Sun Lakes, Ariz.; and several nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends. Gertie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bud; her grandparents; one premature grandchild; eight brothers and sisters-in-law; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
