She died Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Countryside Villa in Wausa, Nebraska. Gertrude (Halleen) Wilbeck was the daughter of Albert and Ella (Tangeman) Halleen. She was born on December 19, 1914 on a farm northeast of Wausa, Nebraska in Cedar County. She lived on the farm during her childhood. She attended Rural School for eight years and then she attended Hartington High School. Gertrude graduated from Hartington High in 1931 as Valedictorian of her class of 34 students. She attended Wayne State College for one year and earned a teacher's certificate. She taught at a rural school, southeast of Wausa, for three years. In 1936, she married Fredrick ChristianWilbeck in Yankton, South Dakota. They were married for 69 years. They were really proud of that. They farmed for 38 years. They were parents of three sons, Fredrick Rodney, Douglas Kent and Larry Lee. There was a lot of hard work on the farm, but there was a lot of camaraderie with their sons. Times were hard, but we made it. In 1974, they retired from the farm and moved to Wausa, Nebraska. Gertrude loved music and taught accordion lessons for 25 years. She urged her sons to take up music and to attend college. Fred and Gertrude enjoyed going to auctions. They collected many beautiful antiques. She was a member of Thabor Lutheran Church and also belonged to the Chat and Sew Neighborhood Club. She is survived by her children, Doug and wife Peg Wilbeck of Minden, Larry and wife Cassie Wilbeck of Deshler; daughter-in-law, Janice Wilbeck of Orange City, IA; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fredrick Christian in 2005; her son, Fredrick Rodney in 2001; parents; brothers; and two sisters.
