Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Geddes. A Committal Service will follow at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 5:00 – 6:45 P.M. Gertrude Josephine Steffens was born on March 9, 1924 to Jacob and Margaret (Travis) Steffens on the family farm in Academy, SD. She attended country school and in 1935 the family moved to Geddes, SD where she then attended country school and St. Ann’s Catholic School, graduating in 1938. In 1942 she graduated from Geddes High School. Gertrude went on to continue her education at the National School of Business in Rapid City, SD. She accepted a position with the Northwestern Telephone Company as an Operator in Valentine, NE. Later she transferred to Omaha, working in several departments of the company. After having completed 39 years of service, she retired from the Facility Department in 1982 and returned to Geddes. Gertrude was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and Altar Society in Geddes and of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Grateful for having shared in Gertrude’s life are many nieces and nephews. Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Margaret Steffens; three sisters: Bernadine Steffens, Agnes Masur and Mary Mushitz; three brothers: John, Paul and William Steffens; several in-laws; and two nephews: Pat Mushitz and Tony Masur.
