Brooks, wife of George A. Mr. Brooks brought his wife to this city from their home in Bazile Mills six weeks ago, expecting that the climate would be beneficial to her health. For the last two or three days, Mrs. Brooks has been greatly improved in health and for the first time since coming here, she was left entirely alone for a short time. When Mr. Brooks returned, he found her dead. Mrs. Brooks never had any children. She was 53 years of age and had been an invalid for the last three years. ...The Creighton Liberal Aug 1906 ******** Gertrude L Congdon was born at Norwich, Conn. June 3, 1853. She was married to George A. Brooks at her father's home in Norwich, March of 1874. The following summer they came to Bazile Mills, which has since been her home. The last few months, her health began to fail and, notwithstanding, everything was done that could be, she did not seem to improve. On the morning of June 20, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks left Bazile Mills for Denver, Colo., arriving there June 21, where it was hoped a change in climate would prove beneficial. She died at Denver, July 31, 1906. Funeral services were held at the home at Bazile Mills last Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Parker of Plainview. The remains were laid to rest in a beautiful vault in the Cedar Hill Cemetery. It was one of the largest attended funerals ever held here and this which the profusion of beautiful flowers from friends, which covered the casket, only demonstrates the high esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. Brooks were held in the community. In speaking of her, Mr. Brooks says, he will never forget how sweet and pretty she looked to him on his arrival from the west, when he came to claim her as his bride. He called upon her unexpectedly, shortly after his arrival. She met him at the door of her home, dressed in a neat gingham dress with a broom in hand. He had no palatial home provided for her, but took her from a comfortable home to live in a lowly dwelling made of logs, with dirt for roof and mother earth for the floor. Here they dwelt, toiling together until success crowned their efforts and a better home was provided. She has often been heard to remark that those years spent in the little cabin were among the happiest of her married life. She cared but little for society and spent most of her time at home, except when traveling with her husband. Besides her husband, she is survived by three sisters; Bertha A.
