She was born on June 5, 1918 in Sioux County, near Crawford, Nebraska. Gertrude was the youngest of nine children of William and Augusta (Heumier) James. She attended school in Sioux County, Dawes County and Scotts Bluff County. While working on the Clark Hickey Ranch in Sioux County, she met George Pedersen, they were married in Scottsbluff, NE. on August 2, 1942 in St. James Lutheran Church. She moved to Scottsbluff in 1944 and to Gering in 1946. During WWII, Gertrude worked at the potato dehydrating plant. Later she worked at the Hartungs Department Store and she hand wrapped butter at Bluffs Creamery on weekends. She taught children at St. Johns Lutheran Church and Faith Lutheran Church. She owned and operated a monogramming business for many years. She opened one of the first Nebraska licensed day care homes in the area in 1966. Her day care was run from her home for 16 years. The children affectionately called her Grandma. When she retired, she researched her family history on both the paternal and maternal sides and published a 224 page book. She organized the annual family reunions. George and Gertrude celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2002 at the Gering Civic Center with a dinner and dance for 200 friends and family. Gertrude enjoyed dances at the Senior Center and playing cards with friends and neighbors. She enjoyed family vacations and fondly remembered attending the World's Fair in Spokane, WA in 1974. Survivors include her husband George of Gering; daughter Joann Loseke of Gering, daughter Judy Pedersen of Friso, TX and granddaughter Michelle Loseke of Redmond, WA. She is also survived by her brother Rollin James, age 100 of Council, Idaho and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Clarence, Ralph and Carl and four sisters Mabel, Rella, Florence and Anna.
