Description	:	Gertrude Ernst, 85, of Schleswig died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek, Iowa. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig. Mrs. Ernst was born March 17, 1913, in Ida County, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Clara (Schumann) Backhaus. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She married Hugo Frederick Ernst on Sept. 28, 1932, in Schleswig. The couple farmed near Schleswig. He died April 3, 1964. She continued to lived on the farm until 1974, when she moved into Schleswig. She was a member of United Church of Christ, Ladies Guild and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, baking and traveling. Survivors include four daughters, Norma Jean and her husband, Gerald Lyman, of Grand Junction, Colo., Bernadine and her husband, Paul Kragel, of Schleswig, Marlene Harper of New London, Iowa, and Jolene and her husband, John Hoefling, of Odebolt, Iowa; two sons and their wives, Charles and Traudl of Roxboro, N.C., and Hugo C. Jr. and Cynthia of Grand Junction; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Fern Stier of Schleswig; a brother, Carl Backhaus of Aurelia, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Clara Schwieso of Marana, Ariz. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Kruse; two brothers, Otto Backhaus and one in infancy; and a grandson, Steven Ernst.
