Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 20, at the First United Methodist Church, Thornton, with the Rev. Rose Calderon-Khan presiding. Clemons THORNTON — Gertrude P. Clemons, 95, of Thornton, died Monday (July 16, 2007) at the IOOF Home in Mason City where she resided. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church in Thornton or the IOOF Home in her memory. Gertrude Pauline Toppin was born May 28, 1912, at Montezuma, a daughter of Andrew and Eva (Hockenberry) Toppin. As a young girl her family moved to Winnebago, Minn., where she attended and graduated from high school. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, graduating in 1931. She then taught country school and also grade school in Meservey and surrounding communities. On Feb. 3, 1934, Gertrude married widower Leslie Lewis Clemons, who had four children. Together they made a loving home for their children: Frances, Jean, Marion, Steve, Larry, John and Janet. She also worked for Oluf T. Hanson’s department store in Clear Lake for many years. In 1972, Gertrude moved from the Clemons Century Farm into the house in Thornton that her father-in-law (Scott Clemons) had built 70 years before. She lived there until moving to the IOOF Home 2½ years ago. Gertrude was active in the First United Methodist Church in Thornton where she was a member of WSCS and UMW. She was also a charter member and 50-year member of the Federation of Iowa Women’s Clubs. She was a wonderful homemaker and cook who enjoyed her family and friends and church fellowship. In later years she traveled quite a bit, visiting many states and Europe. Gertrude is survived by her children, Marion Nedved, Mason City, Steve Clemons, Roy, Utah, Larry (Sharon) Clemons, Boone, John (Shirley) Clemons, Clear Lake; and Janet Clemons, Mason City; 21 grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Toppin of Clear Lake, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents, Andrew and Eva Toppin; husband Leslie Clemons; parents-in-law Scott and Frances Clemons; children, Frances Morris, and Jean Baker; brothers, Maurice, Harlan, Paul and Emory Toppin; sisters, Helen Wright; Mildred Duncanson, and Esther Doolittle; three sons-in-law, Kenneth Baker, Carl Morris and Jerry Nedved; and daughter-in-law, Virginia Clemons; and granddaughter, Shirley.
