Description	:	Gideon was the son of Michael Wire who was born in York County, Pennsylvania in 1794. Michael was married twice and Gideon is the only known child by his second wife Nancy Coffin/Coffman/Kaufman. Michael's parents were Ludwig Weyer, Jr. and Marie Elizabeth Miller who were married in York, Pennsylvania on April 12, 1785. Most of the later generations seem to have adopted the Wire spelling of the name. Michael's first wife was Catherine Sarah Hake the daughter of John Frederick Hake and Catherina Crone. Gideon's Obituary: Gideon J Wire, an aged citizen of this community, who for the past seven years has made his home with the old soldiers at Marshalltown, died in the home Thursday, November 1. Mr Wire was born in Warren county, Ohio, April 30, 1837. Last April he reached his ninetieth birthday. His life time covers nearly two-thirds of our national history. he was born at the close of President Jackson's administration who was the seventh President of the United States. He was nine years old when the Mexican War broke out. Mr Wire was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in Company A, Fourth Wisconsin Infantry at Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin April 18. He was discharged at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dec 31, 1863 and re-enlisted in Company A, Fourth Wisconsin Cavalry, Jan 1, 1864. He served five years and was discharged at Brownsville, TX, May 23, 1866. On July 2, 1867 he came to Iowa, settling at Cambridge and has lived in this vicinity ever since. For more than sixty years he has been an honored and respected citizen of the community. He was united in marriage to Allie Althea Southwick, Nov 15, 1868. Eleven children were born to them, five of whom are living, they are Ruth Johnson, Cambridge, Iowa; George Wire, Laurel, Iowa; Mrs Mila Elliott, Elkhart, Iowa; Mrs Vera Baker, Stuart, Iowa and Mrs. Mildred Fink, Zearing, Iowa. Of the six children who preceded him in death, three were infants, two daughters had grown to womanhood and a son. Willard served in the World War with the Canadian forces and was killed in action in September 1917. Mrs Wire died March 1921. He leaves thirty-two grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
