Description	:	NOTES ABOUT BIRTH DATE AND SPELLING: -- Although his death certificate and WWII draft registration say Gideon was born in 1900, he almost certainly was born at least as late as 1901. His brother Stewart's WWII draft registration and death certificate both say Stewart was born July 14, 1900, which would make a birth date of June 21, 1900 impossible for Gideon. The 1910 and 1920 censuses both show Gideon as one year YOUNGER than Stewart. His brother Stewart's WWII draft registration and death certificate both say Stewart was born July 14, 1900, which would make a birth date of June 21, 1900 impossible for Gideon. The 1910 and 1920 censuses both show Gideon as one year YOUNGER than Stewart. In fact, 1910 suggests they were born in 1901 and 1902, but perhaps someone without specific knowledge gave the information. Gideon got married in 1920--perhaps he increased his age a bit for that purpose. In 1930 and 1940, he identified his birth year as 1901. --Documents and newspaper articles variously spell the last name as either HEDGPETH or HEDGEPETH. In fact, Gideon's wife was listed as HEDGEPETH in her obituary, whereas his obituary and death certificate say HEDGPETH. Gideon himself signed his name as HEDGPETH on his WWII draft registration (although the person filling out the rest of the card used the other spelling . . . ) so it would seem that by that date he had settled on the shorter spelling, and thus I am using that spelling. Gideon, often identified as "Gid" on documents and in newspaper articles, married Rosa Davis on July 23, 1920 in Henderson Township, Vance County, North Carolina. They continued living there as they raised their family. They had 4 children; all of them will be linked. In 1930 Gideon was working as a painter in an automobile factory. In 1940 there was no occupation listed for him, but his wife was working as a Recreation Supervisor in a WPA position.
