Read More	Wayne County Democrat Thursday, July 27, 1922 Gilbert Porter, the only son of D. B and Martha Porter, was born in Clinton Twp., Wayne county, Iowa, October 16, 1885. With the exception of two years spent in Greeley County, Kansas, he lived his entire life in Wayne County. He was united in marriage December 28th, 1904 to Miss Tressie Kint. To this union were born six children: Ella, Ikey, Edith, Margaret, Garry G., and Derle B. All of them are living, their ages ranging from 16 to less than 2 years. Probably no young man in the community was held in higher esteem or had a wider influence for good. He was the type of man in whom everyone naturally trusted, men and women, little children, the young and the old. His heart was generous and kind. His character was exemplary. His personality and sound judgment marked him for leadership among men. At the time of his death he was holding different offices of public trust. He was township clerk, President of the Clinton Twp. Farmers Union and a Director in the Farmers Co-operative Store at Clio, Iowa. He also was a member of the Yeoman Lodge and he had served as Noble Grand in the Tontia Lodge I.O.O.F. No. 614 of Clio, Iowa. He united with the Methodist Protestant Church in 1909 and took an active part in church and Sunday School work. At the time of his death he was the teacher of the older men's class. His faith was expressed in the critical moment when he left his bed for the operating table, when he said to his wife: "I am walking in the footsteps of Jesus". And again among his last words he said: "I will meet my Sunday School Class in Heaven". He was stricken with severe illness at Ravenna, Mo., the 4th day of July. He was taken quickly as possible to the home of his father and mother in Allerton. After an examination by physicians it was thought best to perform an operation to which he submitted July 8th. The operation revealed a very serious condition. He rallied from the effects and for a few days bid fair for recovery. Complications, however, of a malignant form, set in and though attended by two trained nurses and everything done that loving care and kind hands could do, he had to yield to the "Grim Reaper". He passed to his Crown of Victory Tuesday morning, July 18th, 1922, at 8 o'clock, aged 36 years, 9 months and 3 days. In the passing of Gilbert Porter, the community has lost a noble character, a splendid citizen and a devoted brother and friend. The news of his death came as a shock and all were deeply moved with sorrow. His presence amongst us, his kindness, his gentle manner and unfailing cheerfulness will be sorely missed. As a Christian worker, and an exponent of the Christian faith, the church will miss him and it seems there are none who can take his place. In the home the sorrowing wife and the little children whom he loved and in whom his heart delighted, the joy of his presence has gone forever and only the memory of his kind and loving husband and father remains. Besides his immediate home circle he leaves to mourn his departure his father and mother, one sister, Mrs. Etta Blanchard of Newton, Mo., one uncle, Isaac Porter of Allerton, Iowa, and a host of relatives, neighbors and friends. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the sorrowing wife and children and the aged parents. Not lost, blest thought, But gone before, Where we shall meet To part no more. The funeral services were held in the Allerton M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. W.A.Pollock, of Powersville, Mo., assisted by his paster, H.C. Murphy and G.J. Winslow. The body was laid to rest in Allerton's beautiful cemetery.
