Born Oct. 25, 1923, in Ida County, Iowa, Gilbert John Petersen was the son of Chris August and Christena (Janssen) Petersen. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Gib grew up and received his education in Ida County and worked as a farm laborer and truck driver before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his tour of duty, Gib returned to Iowa, where he farmed in Ida County for many years. He retired from farming and moved into Ida Grove in 1979. In addition to farming, Gib was in the seed corn business for 45 years. He was currently semi-retired as a district sales manager for northwest Iowa. On June 1, 1947, Gib married Berdine Bandow at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. One son, Ronald Gilbert Petersen, was born to the couple. Gib was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, where he served in many capacities over the years. He also was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed golfing, playing cards and dancing with his wife of nearly 60 years. He will be remembered as an avid supporter of Battle Creek-Ida Grove High School sporting events. Survivors include his wife, Berdine; a brother and his wife, Leon and Joan Petersen of Ida Grove; many nieces, nephews and other extended family members; as well as a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ronald; and two brothers, Virgil and Emmett.
