Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa, with the Rev. Bob Blair officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee. Visitation will be noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Gilbert L. Ducommun was born Jan. 26, 1934, the son of Fred R. and Minnie M. (Fuhrman) Ducommun of Cleghorn. He graduated from Cleghorn High School, then graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City in 1956. Three months after graduation from Morningside College, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served with the 8th Army Special Troops in Seoul, South Korea. Following his military service, Gilbert was employed by First National Bank of Sioux City and Security National Bank of Sioux City. In 1970 he moved to Midland, and was employed by First Midland Bank & Trust and Comerica Bank. Gilbert was an active photographer for many years and enjoyed activities in a variety of camera clubs, serving as a photographer for the popular River-Cade celebration in Sioux City for several years. He was involved with the photo competition at the Iowa State Fair and other venues. Historical work was Gilbert's primary interest for his post-military years, and he enjoyed the role as "Cleghorn Historian," providing historical research for a wide variety of Cleghorn and Cherokee County subjects over a period of several decades. In October 1992, he was the recipient of the "Iowa Hall of Fame" award presented by Gov. Terry Branstad. His goal had been to return to the family home in Cleghorn and complete his historical work there, but illness delayed him. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Don Ducommun. He is survived by many cousins and friends. Memorials may be directed to the Cherokee Area Archives.
