Description	:	Gilbert N. "Gib" Gotto, age 85, of Castana, Iowa passed away Sunday, December 16, 2012 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa with his family by his side. Gilbert Nicholas "Gib" was born March 7, 1927 at rural Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Math and Anna "Windeshausen" Gotto. He attended country school at Castana, Iowa. "Gib" Gotto, age 85, of Castana, Iowa passed away Sunday, December 16, 2012 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa with his family by his side. Gilbert Nicholas "Gib" was born March 7, 1927 at rural Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Math and Anna "Windeshausen" Gotto. He attended country school at Castana, Iowa. Gib entered the U.S. Navy where he served during the Korean conflict 1948 – 1952 where he was stationed on the U.S.S. John A. Bole as a gunners mate. Gib also served on the U.S.S. Higbee. Gib and Kathy were united in marriage on June 5, 1971. Gib became an instant dad to 5 kids and 1 to come. After returning from the navy service, Gib farmed 2 years and then worked with U.S. Space Division in California for 2 years. Gib returned to farming in Castana and later served with Monona County Maintenance Road Department out of Mapleton, Iowa. Gib was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton and current member of St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa. Gib was a member of the Grimsley Thayer American Legion Post #502 Castana, Iowa, for over 50 years where he was a former commander and secretary. Gib was also the mayor of Castana for many years. Gib is survived by his children, Melissa Gotto of Nashville, TN, Barbara Ernst of Grand Island, NE, Lory Reiners (Rory Barnett) of Whiting, IA, Lisa Murdock of Sloan, IA, Bill (Jo) Murdock of Sloan, and Kenny (Barb) Murdock of Washington; 9 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a sister, Polly, 2 brothers Sy and Cliff all of California; several cousins including special cousin, Jake Behrens of Dunlap, IA; and numerous other relatives and friends. Gib was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Kathy; brothers Tony (who died in WWII), Leonard, Cletus, and Matthew; sisters, Catherine, Clara, Esther, and Eleanor.
