Description	:	Gilbert Patterson was the eldest son of Charles Patterson (b. circa 1790-d. 1848) of Richmond County, North Carolina, and his first wife, Effie Brown (b. circa 1799-d. before 1831). Gilbert Patterson married Margaret Ann Patterson, daughter of Daniel Patterson and Nancy Leich, on 13 Oct 1851 in Richmond County, North Carolina. Margaret died in 1868 at the age of forty-one. During 1870's and early 1880's, Gilbert Patterson amassed several quality tracts of land in the Shoe Heel area which eventually became the Town of Maxton. Read More	Gilbert Patterson was the eldest son of Charles Patterson (b. circa 1790-d. 1848) of Richmond County, North Carolina, and his first wife, Effie Brown (b. circa 1799-d. before 1831). Gilbert Patterson married Margaret Ann Patterson, daughter of Daniel Patterson and Nancy Leich, on 13 Oct 1851 in Richmond County, North Carolina. Margaret died in 1868 at the age of forty-one. During 1870's and early 1880's, Gilbert Patterson amassed several quality tracts of land in the Shoe Heel area which eventually became the Town of Maxton. As a matter of fact, in 1879, Gilbert donated the land on Maxton's Patterson Street for the building of the First Presbyterian Church there. Gilbert also held large tracts of farm land (either by purchase or by inheritance from his father and his deceased wife's siblings), one of which straddled Robeson County and the portion of Richmond County which is now called Scotland County, North Carolina. Gilbert and Margaret had six known children: 1. Charles Patterson, married Annie F. Bizzell 2. Nancy C. Patterson, married Murdock Milton McKinnon 3. Effie Mary Patterson, married Warren D. Baldwin 4. Daniel Alexander Patterson, never married 5. John Archibald Patterson, married Ada Isabella Leitch 6. Gilbert Brown Patterson, well-known Maxton lawyer, orator, and United States Congressman, married Mrs. Martha Virginia McNair Evans Gilbert Patterson had a younger sister, Caroline Jane Patterson, who married Calvin Graham and lived on land which eventually became the Town of Proctorville in Robeson County, North Carolina. Gilbert also had three step-brothers from his father's second marriage to Isabella McLaurin: A. Malloy Patterson -- surveyor of the original town of Shoe Heel, which became Maxton, never married B. Charles Calhoun Patterson -- land owner, married Victoria Britt, no children C. James Postell Patterson -- farmer, married Mary C. Leach, had six children, only two of whom had any children.
