Gilbert Haney was born April 29, 1902 to James and Maria (Sidle) Haney in Delmar, Iowa and he died Friday, June 30, 1995 at the Platte Community Hospital. The family moved to a farm east of Geddes when he was 5 years old. He graduated from Geddes High School, in 1921, attended one year at Yankton College, and farmed with his father until 1935. He also operated a gas station in Geddes from 1935 to 1949, and was in the Army from September 1940 to March 1941. On July 1, 1950, he married Lucile Sorenson in Sioux Falls. He managed the lumber yard in Geddes from 1949 to 1960, and then he worked for the ASCS office until 1964, when he retired. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, served on the board of trustees for many years and was a church choir member for 64 years. He was life member of the American Legion and served on the Geddes School Board, and was its president for 14 years. He is survived by his wife, Lucile, of Geddes; two sisters; Grace Fijala of Geddes and Wima Wahldieck of Battle Lake, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and three brothers.
