Gilbert was born Dec. 11, 1924, in Petersburg, Iowa, son of William and Calista (Klaus) Goedken. He was born and raised on the family farm and farmed in Earlville, Iowa, until 1972, then moving to Dubuque, he worked for John Deere Dubuque Works from 1973 until 1985 as a material handler. He married Germaine Sellner on Sept. 14, 1948, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earlville. Gilbert was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church since 1980 and a member of the Knights of Columbus for 65 years. He was a 4th Degree Knight of the Duborg Assembly. He enjoyed farming, woodworking, putting puzzles together and spending time with his family playing Chinese checkers and cards, especially rummy and euchre. Gilbert led by example. Giving of his time and talents, he fostered many children. He also was an avid Boy Scouts leader. Gilbert was a loving husband and devoted father. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Germaine; children; Dennis (Karen) Goedken, of Quincey, Fla., Lori (Fernando) Mejia, of Dubuque, David Goedken, of Dubuque, and Annette (Philip) Wilson, of Hermantown, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Andrew Goedken, of Hermantown, Minn., Emerson (Erica) Buchanan, of Monticello, Wis., Erik Wilson, of Hermantown, Brooklyn Goedken, of Hermantown, Nichole Joos, of Ferndale, Mich., Austin Joos, of Dubuque, Mallory Joos (Justin), of Dubuque, Emilio and Isabel Mejia, of Dubuque; four great-granddaughters, Kalea Rae Goedken, Taylynn Marie Havens, Scarlett Ann Gardner, and Riley Jo Buchanan; siblings, Norma (Vernon) Brunsman, of Dyersville, Iowa, Mary Lou Engelken, of Bankston, Iowa, Inez (Francis) Hermsen, of Manchester, Iowa, Valerie Bockenstedt, of Petersburg, Iowa, Laverne (Patsy) Goedken, of Holy Cross, Iowa, Carol (Dale) Clemen, of Dubuque, John (Marilyn) Goedken, of Petersburg, Iowa; a brother in-law, Marvin (Jan) Rolfes, of Colesburg, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gilbert was preceded in death by his daughter Sheryl; parents; three sisters, Patricia Rolfes, Stella (Leo) Demmer, and Helen (Emil) Wilgenbush; brothers-in-law, Irvin Bockenstedt and Elmer Engelken.
