Inurnment will be at Trondhjem Lutheran Cemetery in rural Volin, South Dakota. Gilbert was born April 11, 1940, at Delmont, South Dakota to Edwin and Addie (Powers) Kapfenstein. He grew up on a farm in rural Delmont and graduated from Wagner High School in 1958. After school, he served in the United States National Guard for six years. After his service with the Guard, he moved to Yankton where he worked at the Human Services Center for 35 years until his retirement. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved spending time hunting and fishing. Survivors include one son, Doug Kapfenstein of Brookings, South Dakota; one daughter, Pam Nordquist of Wagner, South Dakota; four grandchildren; his mother, Addie Kapfenstein of Lesterville; three sisters and their husbands: Darlene and Cliff Gullikson of Yankton, Gloria and Larry Schurman of Yankton and Marilyn and Jim Lynch of Burlington, Vermont; one brother and his wife, Donald and Bernie Kapfenstein of Freeport, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin and his wife, Joyce.
