Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 26, 2011, at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church with Pastor Kevin M. Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Bluemont Cemetery. The Carroll County Public School System is mourning the loss of long-time educator and administrator Wade Meredith after his tragic death early Monday morning in a fire in his Hillsville home. Meredith, 58, had been an educator in Carroll County Schools for the past 36 years. A long-time teacher, Meredith was most recently the Coordinator of Alternative Education in Carroll County. He began his career in education as a 7th, 8th and 9th grade science and math teacher at then-Hillsville Intermediate School, where he worked in that capacity from 1975-1997. From 1997-2006, he served as the assistant principal at St. Paul School in Cana. From 2006-2009, Meredith served as Coordinator of Alternative Education and Student Attendance. He had held the position of Coordinator of Alternative Education since July of 2009. "A tragedy has impacted our CCPS family. Wade Meredith, Coordinator of Alternative Education, an educator within the Carroll County Public Schools for 36 years, perished in a home fire around midnight," Carroll County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg Smith wrote to staff Monday morning. "Currently, there are no other details, we will share information as it becomes available. The RAE Center staff arrived early this morning to share information regarding his death and to formulate an intervention plan for the students. A crisis management team will be present throughout the day and will remain on site as long as they are needed." Smith said Meredith was a dedicated educator who worked tirelessly for the children and adults of Carroll County. "On numerous occasions I have seen him working long hours, nights and weekends, to complete tasks or supervise students. Mr. Meredith facilitated the expansion of services to students at the RAE Center, including the CHOICES day care program for student mothers and fathers," Smith wrote. "He was most proud of the accomplishments of the Adult Education Program, which as a result of his supervision received one of the highest rankings for service in Virginia. Please join me in prayer for his family and reflection regarding his work with the children of Carroll County." The Carroll County Sheriff's Office and Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call of a fire at Meredith's home at 3713 Floyd Pike in Hillsville at 12:01 a.m. Monday morning. Sheriff Warren Manning said a passing motorist made the call. Manning said the fire was fully involved when emergency personnel arrived on scene. "When we arrived, the structure fire was visible from the roof. The fire had come through the roof of the structure and the outer wall," Manning said. "At this time we don't know for sure (what caused the fire). We have no indication it was anything other than something electrical or something of that nature."
