Born on May 7, 1916 in Mullins, he was a son of the late William Douglas Jenerette and Cornie Altman Jenerette. He attended Furman University and graduated University of South Carolina School of Law. A veteran of World War II he earned a number of combat decorations, among them the Distinguished Service Cross for "intrepid actions, personal bravery, and zealous devotion to duty;" the British Military Cross; and the Purple Heart. Read More	WORLD WAR II Son of William Douglas and Cornie Altman Jenerette. NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — Giles A. Jenerette, 93, died Monday, December 28, 2009. Born on May 7, 1916 in Mullins, he was a son of the late William Douglas Jenerette and Cornie Altman Jenerette. He attended Furman University and graduated University of South Carolina School of Law. A veteran of World War II he earned a number of combat decorations, among them the Distinguished Service Cross for "intrepid actions, personal bravery, and zealous devotion to duty;" the British Military Cross; and the Purple Heart. After WWII, he returned to Mullins to practice law and serve as Company Commander of the Mullins unit of the SC National Guard. In the early 1960s, he returned to active military duty to serve a tour in the Pentagon. Upon leaving the Pentagon, having attained the rank of Major, he moved to Conway where he served first as a teacher and then as assistant principal at Conway High School, from which he retired in 1981. Giles then moved to North Myrtle Beach where he spent his retirement years. He was predeceased by three sisters, Marian Graves, Ellen Winstead, and Annette Brown, one brother, Billy Jenerette, and one niece, Honey. Mr. Jenerette is survived by one brother, Blake Rigby Jenerette. Private services will be at a later date. Since Giles spent a good part of his life playing the organ or piano in churches, the family requests any memorials be given to the music program of their church. Published in The State, December 30, 2009 "After entering the U.S. Army, Jenerette served in Panama in 1941 and, in 1942, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry. On 25 December 1944, then-First Lieutenant Giles Altman Jenerette was serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 290th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations. On that day, 1LT Jenerette’s unit was in action against German forces in the vicinity of Odeigne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge. Cut off from the rest of his company, 1LT Jenerette organized and led a patrol of 13 men in a raid against fanatical German SS troops located in the town. There, 1LT Jenerette personally destroyed a German 88 mm gun and its crew with hand grenades by crawling to the emplacement under heavy, point-blank fire. He and his squad then destroyed several German one-man gun positions, two 88 mm gun emplacements and 25 vehicles. This neutralized half of the company of SS troops in the city. Although wounded in the chest by machine gun fire, 1LT Jenerette remained in command and guided his squad to safety through two and one-half miles of German territory. 1LT Jenerette’s selfless, courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. For the action above, 1LT Jenerette was also awarded the British Military Cross."
