Description	:	GILES RICHARD MARTIN Was born in Hendersonville, Knox Co., Illinois, Jan. 30, 1838. He was next to the youngest of ten children born to James and Sarah Martin all of whom have passed beyond. In the autumn of 1838 his father came to this county and took up a claim about five miles southeast of Marion, in the Martin's Creek neighborhood. After clearning five acres and putting in the crops, he returned to Illinois, the following year and brought his family to Iowa with him. He was next to the youngest of ten children born to James and Sarah Martin all of whom have passed beyond. In the autumn of 1838 his father came to this county and took up a claim about five miles southeast of Marion, in the Martin's Creek neighborhood. After clearning five acres and putting in the crops, he returned to Illinois, the following year and brought his family to Iowa with him. Giles, as he was familary called, was then but a small childn and one to see him in later years so straight and tall, would not take him to be a man who was here with the earliest of pioneers, but at that time Cedar Rapids nor Marion were not laid out. Later he spent a few years in Kansas then returned to Iowa, where he has made his home with the exception of the years when he served his country as a member of the 26th Indiana battery in the department of the Ohio. He was in the campaigns in West Virginia and Maryland and was present at the surrender of Harper's Ferry. Mr. Martin was never married and for the past fifteen years or more Mr. and Mrs. Harry Parker have been keeping house for him. In early life he joined the Methodist church and has remained true to his Savior. He was a good-hearted man and to know him was to know of many kind deeds shown to others. He will be greatly missed in the home circle and among his comrades and acquaintances. For many years he was a member of the I.O.O.F. and was also a member of the G.A.R. On Oct. 29, he had a fall from which he never recovered and passed away, Nov. 24, 1915. The Marion Register from Marion, Iowa November 30, 1915
