He was a graduate of Dentsville High School and retired from the Norfolk Southern Railroad after 43 years of service. Mr. Monroe and his late wife, Virginia, owned and operated Monroe Poultry Farm for 35 years. Read More	Gillyard Percival Monroe, Jr., 86, of Elgin, born in Pontiac, SC, on June 19, 1925, to Gillyard Percival Monroe, Sr. and Pearl Goff Monroe, died Thursday, February 2, 2012. He was a graduate of Dentsville High School and retired from the Norfolk Southern Railroad after 43 years of service. Mr. Monroe and his late wife, Virginia, owned and operated Monroe Poultry Farm for 35 years. Mr. Monroe had been a member of Union Baptist Church for over 40 years, where he served as Deacon and maintained the church cemetery for many years. Mr. Monroe was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Virginia. He is survived by his daughters, Myra Monroe and Cynthia (Don) Stewart of Elgin; son, Gill (Brenda) Monroe of Lexington; sisters, Beulah Bowen of Elgin and Marian Brown of Columbia; brothers, Delano and John Monroe of Elgin; grandchildren, Denise (Linnie) Branham, Hank (Cate) Goff, Drew (Casey) Monroe, Ashley (Matt) Smith, Misty Burroughs, and Chelsea Greiner, as well as five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Monroe was preceded in death by his sisters, Beatrice Brown and Oneida Johnston. Funeral service: 3:00 o'clock Saturday, February 4, 2012, at Union Baptist Church, 1177 Wildwood Lane, Elgin, with The Reverend Jerry B. Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
