Description	:	Gina Ranae Westerhuis was born on July 19, 1977, to Harm and Patricia (Janda) Westerhuis in Yankton, SD. She graduated from Platte High School in 1995 and attended South Dakota State University and Northern State University. Gina loved traveling independently or with friends. She had been to Russia, Germany, Ireland, Peru, Italy, England, Canada, and many states in the United States. She loved animals of any type, but particularly her Irish Setter Finn. Read More	Gina Ranae Westerhuis was born on July 19, 1977, to Harm and Patricia (Janda) Westerhuis in Yankton, SD. She graduated from Platte High School in 1995 and attended South Dakota State University and Northern State University. Gina loved traveling independently or with friends. She had been to Russia, Germany, Ireland, Peru, Italy, England, Canada, and many states in the United States. She loved animals of any type, but particularly her Irish Setter Finn. She also loved horses and owned horses since she was very little. When she couldn't ride anymore, she loved volunteering at a therapeutic riding center. She loved being an aunt to her nieces and nephews. She loved hanging out with friends, and she had a very supportive and loving circle of friends. Gina loved to read many different types of books. She also loved to write journals of her trips and her life experiences. She enjoyed photography – taking and developing pictures, especially black and white. She also was fond of designing and making stained glass objects. She really enjoyed acting, and spent many pleasurable hours with the members of the Platte Players. Gina was very passionate about giving and volunteering with Wings & Hope, and she was very grateful for the support they have given her the past few years. Gina was a fighter, and fought for over 6 ½ years to overcome the cancer that claimed her life. One of her favorite sayings was "It is what it is." She touched many lives and will be missed by many. Gina, 31, passed away Friday, February 6, 2009 at Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN. Grateful for sharing her life are: her mother Pat Westerhuis of Platte, her brothers Marc Westerhuis of Rolla, MO, and Scott (Nicole) Westerhuis of Platte; nephews and nieces Dakotah and Rebecca Westerhuis of Salem, OR, Michael, Connor, Jaeci and Kailey Westerhuis of Platte; aunts Judy (Tom) Harvey of Abilene, TX, Clarice (David) Little of Canon City, CO, Bertha (Harm) Kuipers of Platte; her dog Finn, and many friends. Preceding her in death were: her maternal and paternal grandparents, her father Harm Westerhuis (in January 2009), infant siblings Michael and Angela, and aunt and uncle Phyllis and Buck Meyers. Visitation will be Thursday, February 12, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. at the Platte Funeral Chapel, with a prayer service to follow at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, February 13, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Platte with Brad Veurink officiating. Burial will be in the Edgerton Cemetery rural Platte. "In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wings and Hope."
