Services will be held today, June 8, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton with the Rev. Karen Garrison officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mapleton. Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton is in charge of the arrangements. Gladyce was born near Soldier, Iowa, on Aug. 21, 1912, one of nine children born to Carl and Nannie (Clemon) Swenson. She grew up on a farm south of Soldier, attended the Thorson Country School, and graduated from Soldier High School in 1932. She was baptized and confirmed at the Soldier Lutheran Country Church. She attended nurse's training at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City and later worked for several doctors in Monona County. She married Niles P. "Pete" Nelson on Nov. 1, 1938, at Soldier. The couple farmed south of Mapleton until they moved to town in 1969. They were blessed with three children, Arlo, Floyd, and Judy. Gladyce was a homemaker and a loving and caring wife and mother. She worked hard on the farm and made a warm and welcoming home for her family. She planted a large garden each year and canned and froze most of the family's food. She showed her love for her family through her cooking and baking of countless delicious meals and treats. She enjoyed sewing and made numerous items for her home and her family with her talents. She enjoyed gathering with her immediate family as well as her seven sisters and, in later years, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gladyce volunteered at St. John's Methodist Church where she was a member, and with the community chest and the senior center. When her husband entered Maple Heights Nursing Home in 1995, Gladyce moved to the Maple Crest Apartments in Mapleton. Pete died in 1996. Gladyce moved to Regency Care Center in 2000. Surviving Gladyce are her sons, Arlo and his wife Donna, and Floyd and his wife, Thelma, all of Sioux City; and her daughter, Judy Meister of Owatonna. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren, and a sister, Evelyn Maberry of Onawa, Iowa. Gladyce was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Pete; one brother, six sisters, her son-in-law, Woody Meister, and one great-granddaughter. Gladyce will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, her kindnesses, her sense of humor, and for always putting others before herself. Her family will greatly miss her and will always cherish her love for them. Memorials are preferred to St. John's United Methodist Church, Fisher-Whiting Library in Mapleton, or the donor's choice.
