"Bill" Lias, of 92 Washington ave., Chantal Court, has presented many problems that have perplexed cith and county officials who have been investigating the case. The death of Mrs. Lias occurred Thursday night at the home of Mrs. Mike Russell, 2342 Chapline street, where Mrs. Lias is reported to have shot herself because of despondency over ill-health. Prosecutor Don McKee has indicated that Mrs. Lias and Mrs. Russell had quarrelled over the phone Thursday. However, he was emphatic in stating that he was certain that Mrs. Lias shot herself and that there was no evidence that anybody else had fired any of the five bullets which penetrated Mrs. Lias' body. Left Home at Nine Mrs. Lias is said to have left her home in Chantal Court shortly before 9 o'clock. She drove to Wheeling and visited the home of her brother, Lewis A. Bradley. From the home of her brother she drove to the gasoline station at Twenty-fourth and Chapline street. The gasoline tank of the Lias automobile was filled at the station. Mrs. Lias then drove the short distance to the Russell home. Mrs. Russell is said to have been alone at the time of the arrival of the Lias woman. Mrs. Russell has told officials that Mrs. Lias arrived at her home shortly before 10 o'clock. She said that the woman was despondent over the necessity of undergoing an operation for gallstones and was highly excited. Paced Rooms Prosecutor McKee said that Mrs. Russell told him that Mrs. Lias paced from room to room during her visit. He said that Mrs. Russell said that Mrs. Lias was seated on a bed and procurred the revolver from a bedside stand and declared, "I am tired of living; I can't stand it any more; I'm going to end it all." Mrs. Russell claims that she grabbed for the gun and pulled it down, but the other woman was too strong for her. Mrs. Russell is reported to have run to the first floor where she declared, "They will hang me for this, because no one saw her do it." She told Dr. W. G. Boller, osteopath, what had occurred. He called Dr. Thomas Klug, who resides nearby. Mrs. Lias was dead before the arrival of a physician. Post Mortem A post mortem operation showed that Mrs. Lias had been struck by five bullets. One had entered the left knee, another the left shoulder and three had penetrated the left breast, one passing through the heart. There were only powder burns about the would on the leg. The gun a 32-20 calibre automatic, is now in the hands of George Dixon, finger print expert of the Wheeling police department. It is reported to have been picked up by several persons. Officials are also attempting to determine how Mrs. Lias sustained a broken nose and lacerations about the forehead and side of the scalp. The theory has been advanced that she may have sustained these injuries when she fell after being struck by the bullets. The body is reposing at the Schmeichel funeral home. Services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery. Mrs. Lias was born September 25, 1900 at Epworth, Iowa, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Bradley. Surviving in addition to her husband is one son, William George; one sister, Mrs. Maria Niemeyer, of Guttenberg, Iowa and one brother, Lewis A. Bradley, of Wheeling. Her husband is grief stricken. NOTE: She was originally buried at Greenwood Cemetery in West Virginia but her body was removed on Nov. 10, 1964 to Highview Cemetery.
