She was born March 15, 1922 in Bremen, Ohio to the late Cyrus Gordon and Ida Evelyn (Keller) Steen. Mrs. Kemp was a 1940 Graduate of Toboso High School. She was a member and past-president of the American Legion Post 85 Auxiliary and was also a member of the 40/8 Club. Gladys enjoyed playing bingo, listening to country music and sewing. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia A. (John) Walsh and son, Donald L. (Paula) Hatfield, both of Newark; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and step-daughter, Gail (Brian) Nelson of Erie, PA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Melvin Chester Hatfield and Leon C. Kemp; a daughter, Norma E. Barker-Lambert; infant twins; brothers, Carl E., Oren J., Edwin and Edgar Steen; two sisters, Mary A. Wood and Helen M. Price; and step-son, Raymond Kemp. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, October 8, at the funeral home, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark, where the American Legion Post #85 Auxiliary will have a service at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Generation Hospice.
