Description	:	A former Creighton resident, Gladys Ellis Van Camp, died at the age of 98 on January 15, 1988 in Lincoln. Her cremains were placed in Greenwood Cemetery beside her husband on May 27. Van Camp has two cousins residing in Creighton, Gail Burdick, a former postmaster of the Creighton Post Office and Marie Witwer Meikle. Van Camp has two cousins residing in Creighton, Gail Burdick, a former postmaster of the Creighton Post Office and Marie Witwer Meikle. Gladys Ellis was born to parents, Ulysses Newton and Mary Elizabeth Ellis on October 4, 1889 in Butler County, Nebraska. A brother, Merlin N. Ellis, resides in Vancouver, Wash. Her youth was spent on a farm northeast of Creighton. After graduating from Creighton High School in 1909, she taught in several one room country schools of this area, including Prairie Dale School, two miles from here home. After teaching sixth grade in the Creighton Schools in 1918-19, she was principal at Winnetoon Public School, where she met and married William J. Van Camp. After his death two years later, she resumed teaching in Osmond, Then obtained a degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and taught in the Lincoln Public Schools until her retirement in 1956, a total of 45 years of teaching. She retained her interest in Creighton through the years and attended several high school reunions, wearing the graduation dress her mother handmade for her in 1909. She cherished Creighton friendships and especially enjoyed contacts from her former pupils. She enjoyed active good health until two weeks before her death and had planned to attend the Creighton High School reunion this June. Survivors included a daughter, Mona and son-in-law, William V. Ruyle of Lincoln; six grandchildren; nieces, nephews and former Creighton area cousins, Mildred Burdick Vine of San Diego, Calif. Lucille Witwer Phillips of Auburn, Ruth Witwer Seaman of St. Louis Park, Minn, Bertha Burdick of Ansley and Eileen Witwer Classen. She was preceded in death by her husband and brothers, Glen and Robert. ...The Creighton News 1 June 1988 A pretty wedding occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. U.N. Ellis on Friday June 3rd at high noon, when their daughter, Gladys was united in marriage to Wm. J. Van Camp. Rev. V.M. Bressler of Winnetoon performing the ceremony in the midst of only immediate relatives and a few close friends. The couple was unattended. The bride was gowned in a beautiful dress of white georgette and the groom was conventionally attired. Immediately after the ceremony a delicious wedding dinner was served. Both of these young people come from highly respected parents. Mrs. Van Camp is the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis and is one of our successful teachers, having taught in the rural and city schools and is a graduate of the Creighton High School. Mr. Van Camp is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Van Camp of Winnetoon and is a graduate of the Wayne State Normal. He is a very ambitious young man and likewise has been very successful in his work. They will make their home at Lexington, Nebr., where Mr. Van Camp has a position teaching in the city schools. She was born March 13, 1922, died March 6, 2008.
