Read More	From Nevada Journal December 30, 2004 (page 7) OBITUARIES--------- Gladys Emma Overbaugh Shelton Gladys Emma Overbaugh Shelton, 102, died at Story County Medical Center in Nevada on Monday, December 27, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 31 at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada with Deacon Brenda Hobson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the First United Methodist Church in Nevada. Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with the arrangements. Gladys was born on December 12, 1902 near Nevada, Iowa. Her parents were John Peter and Emma Leona (Jackson) Hoel. She enjoyed growing up in a large, loving family and told many stories of the pleasures she shared with her brothers and sisters, Roy, Lee, Willie, Lovie, Hazel, Fern, Guy, Gen and Mabel. She also told of the long walk to Hickory Grove School east of Nevada. Gladys married Phillip Overbaugh in Marshalltown on Dec. 19, 1923. They farmed in Polk and Story counties until 1955 when they moved from the Shipley Community to Ames. She worked at Linden Hall for 12 years. Phil died at the Veteran's Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1967 after a long battle with Parkinson's. Gladys loved to do handiwork, cook and entertain. She taught a Sunday school class for years and loved doing nice things for other people. She loved traveling and enjoyed trips to New York, California, Florida and the Bahamas. One of her favorite places was the Ozarks. She celebrated her 96th birthday in Branson, seeing many shows. Her favorite was the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, featuring a living nativity scene with camels, sheep and other animals. She was presented with roses on the Branson Belle and said the entire trip was the best trip of her life. In 1975, she married Jewell Shelton of Des Moines. They lived in Des Moines for 15 years. After Jewell's death, she returned to Nevada and lived in her own apartment until she was 101 years old. The past year she made her home at Rolling Green Village and Story County Long Term Care facilities No one appreciated the cards and visits of thoughtful friends and relatives, both young and old, more than Gladys. She loved a good visit more than anything. Gladys was preceded in death by her husbands and and an infant son, Eldon Phillip. She is survived by a daughter, Darlene Bannigan, two grandsons Kevin and Scott, a great grandson Brett and a great granddaughter, Marissa, all of Springfield, Missouri. She is also survived by a step-daughter Leila and her husband Bob Thompson of Des Moines, two step grandchildren Jack and Lynne and four step great grandchildren Matt, Claire, Joe and Sammi. Gladys is survived by one sister, Genevieve Hagen of Nevada and many nieces and nephews.
