Shrum was born in Phillips County, Kansas, on September 20, 1902, the seventh child of 11 born to Carl and Sophrina (Finch) Schulke. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church as a child. She became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Benkelman, Nebraska, in 1977, and was a member of the Presbyterian Missionary Guild. As a young school teacher she met and married William Shrum of the Rollwitz community in Dundy County, Nebraska, on July 18, 1927. To this union were born four children: Jean, Carol, Jacqueline and William. The Shrums enjoyed 58 years of married life together, first on the farm near Rollwitz and then at their home in Benkelman where they moved in later years. Friends and family were always welcome in their home. Gladys taught grade school at the Rollwitz and area schools for 25 years. Many children, including her own children and grandchildren, were fortunate to have had her further their education. Mrs. Shrum was the heart of her family and was happiest when her family was near. She enjoyed having her family for Sunday dinners and holidays. She never failed to make sure her grandchildren were fed and having fun. She would read a story or color a picture with them at a moment's notice. She had several hobbies she enjoyed such as crocheting, ceramics and decoupaging, and she was always an avid reader. When, because of poor health, the other hobbies went by the wayside, she continued to read, sometimes two books at a time. Her eyesight was good, faithful to her until the last. She died Tuesday, November 16, 1993, at the Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman with her family at her side. She was 91 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Sophrina Schulke; her husband, Bill; her son, William Charles who died in infancy, her brothers, Edmund, Carl and Phillip, and her sisters, Anna, Atelia, Sophronia, Mary and Florence. Mrs. Shrum is survived by her daughters, Jean and her husband, Carl Lutz, of Parks, Nebraska, Carol and her husband, William Tyerman, of Champion, Nebraska, and Jacqueline Martin of Benkelman; her brothers, Paul Schulke and his wife, Wanda, of Silverton, Oregon, and Alvin Schulke and his wife, Deena, of Alma, Nebraska. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and by special nieces and nephews. Services were held Friday, November 19, 1993, at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Benkelman with the Rev. Douglas Allen officiating. Organist was Helen Lutz and Kelly Hayward sang AWhen God Comes And Gathers His Jewels," "Grandma Harp" and "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." The congregational hymn was "How Great Thou Art." Bearers were her grandsons and grandsons-in-law: Jim Lutz, Scott Lutz, Mike David, Tim Tyerman, Tab Martin, Bob Ellis, Kelly Hayward and Geoff Clark. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery at Wauneta, Nebraska, with arrangements by Jones Funeral Home of Benkelman.
