Nissen was born on January 26, 1921, the daughter of Conrad and Hannah (Peterson) Nissen. The family moved to Mason City in 1934 and she graduated from Mason City High School in 1938. Gladys married Merrill J. Fiala on November 5, 1938 in Fairbault, MN, and together they raised five children: Marilyn, Connie Sue, Kathy, Frank, and Joe. She worked for Hub Clothing in sales and accounting for 27 years, retiring in 1974. She loved working with people and in sales. She had a wonderful ability to remember her customers and where they were from. Gladys was famous for her pies and homemade piecrust, she enjoyed refinishing furniture, doing yard work, knitting, crosswords, and jigsaw puzzles. She even power washed and repainted her house many times inside and out. Gladys loved all sports, particularly the Minnesota Twins and Iowa Hawkeyes, but most importantly she enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren, and friends. She is survived by 5 children; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Norma Bell, Clear Lake, IA. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Merrill Fiala, her parents, Conrad and Hannah (Peterson) Nissen, and infant daughter, Susan, two brothers, a sister, one great-grandson, William Fiala, a grandson, Timothy Hegtvedt and a daughter-in-law, Diane Fiala.
