She was a member of First Baptist Church of Gaston, and taught Sunday School for more than 50 years. She served in a multitude of capacities in her church and was always willing to offer a helping hand. She was a committed, compassionate Christian, faithful wife, loving mother and grandmother, friend of many and devoted servant of the Lord. Mrs. Smith was born May 4, 1917, in Lexington County. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Gaston, and taught Sunday School for more than 50 years. She served in a multitude of capacities in her church and was always willing to offer a helping hand. She was a committed, compassionate Christian, faithful wife, loving mother and grandmother, friend of many and devoted servant of the Lord. Her husband of 56 years, Howard Smith and their eldest daughter, Margaret Balch, preceded Mrs. Smith in death. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Sara and Bill Payne of Charlotte, NC; Llewellyn and Erskine Shivers of Gaston, Emily and Lloyd Hatfield of Johnston, SC; sister and brother-in-law, Effie and Walter Sons of West Columbia; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rachel Sharpe of Gaston, Mrs. Jettie Craft and Mrs. Lottie Smith, both of Swansea; 10 grandchildren, Pam Rogers, Patrick Payne, "Rusty" Shivers, Charlene Bailey, Donna Morrow, Michael Hatfield, Miriam Burton, Jason Balch, Karen Young and Laure Eide; 20 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Sunday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be conducted by Rev. Jim Fanning and Rev. Gary Farmer at First Baptist Church of Gaston on Monday at 3 pm with burial to follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Gaston, P.O.
