She passed away on Jan. 18, 2013 at the age of 84 at her daughter Kathy's home with her husband, Merl, and grandchildren, Kim & Tom, at her side. She was the daughter of Harry and Katharine (Hild) Wilhelm. She lived in Tecumseh until June of 1944 when her family moved to Palmyra and opened Wilhelm Grocery Store where she worked until she graduated. She was the daughter of Harry and Katharine (Hild) Wilhelm. She lived in Tecumseh until June of 1944 when her family moved to Palmyra and opened Wilhelm Grocery Store where she worked until she graduated. She finished her Junior and Senior years at Palmyra High School, graduating in 1946. She met Merl Sorensen when he returned from the Navy. They eloped and were married on Jan. 11, 1947 in Marysville, Kan. They raised Jim, Bob, & Kathy and were married 66 years on Jan. 11, 2013. She was the co-owner of Sorensen Machine for 45 years. She also worked at the sewing factory in Syracuse and was the temporary post master in Palmyra for 10 years. She was a member of the Palmyra Presbyterian Church, a member of Easter Star and the Legion Post Auxiliary. Merl and Gladys lived in Palmyra until March 2011 when they moved to Savannah Pines in Lincoln. Gladys and Merl wintered in Yuma, Ariz. for 20 years and have many dear friends there. She enjoyed traveling, reading, sewing, flowers, cards and board games. Gladys was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry & Katharine; her brother, Bob Wilhelm; and granddaughter, Jennifer Jean English. She is survived by her husband, Merl of Lincoln; her sons, Jim (Judy) Sorensen of Keller, Texas, Bob (Natalie) Sorensen of Lincoln; her daughter, Kathy Sorensen of Lincoln; her sister, Mary Ann (Wilhelm) White of Lincoln; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Presbyterian Church in Palmyra with Rev. Carl Eskridge officiating. Visitation from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the funeral home in Syracuse. Family suggests memorials to the family's choice.
