Read More	Gladys Heier, 88, of Hettinger, ND, died on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger. Gladys Carola Knutson was born February 9, 1922 at Ellingson, SD to Albert and Selma (Peterson) Knutson, the third of 15 children. She attended Johnson School through the 8th grade and graduated from High School in Reeder, ND. During high school she especially enjoyed playing and lettering in basketball ~ impressive especially since she was "vertically challenged. Gladys loved her brothers and sisters and cherished her childhood memories. Even though she grew up during the Depression, the stories she shared were always of good times: music, laughter and food. She loved going fishing with her uncles and grandmother. She would recall gathering around her mother's big oak table sharing of the good food and good times: Easter breakfasts of fresh bread and boiled eggs and lunches of bread, butter and radish sandwiches. Her love of milk toast certainly came from these times. She married Arlie A. Heier on December 20, 1940, at Baker, MT. To this union three children were born: Patsy Arlene, James Bennett and Arlie Andrew, Jr. Gladys spent three desperately lonely years from 1942 – 1945 waiting for Arlie's return from WWII. Before Arlie shipped overseas, Gladys worked at the Army Post Exchange at Ft. Sheridan while Arlie was stationed there. Patsy recalls sitting with Gladys by a kerosene lamp while Gladys wrote to Arlie, including tracings of little Patsy's hands. Gladys would carefully follow all news reports of troop movements on a map of Europe to try and determine where Arlie might be, since all his letters were censored of that information. Gladys took a great deal of pride in Arlie's service to our country. After Arlie returned, the couple began farming on the home place east of Ludlow, SD, where they raised wheat, sheep, and their three children. Gladys always defined her life in terms of being a dedicated farm wife. She kept an immaculate house and was an amazing cook. Her children were greeted nearly every afternoon by the aroma of freshly baked, homemade bread. She made the best fried chicken, mashed potatoes and cream gravy in the world. Her chocolate cake and blueberry pies were unequaled. Music was a joy the couple shared with their family and friends. Gladys would play the organ, while Arlie played the fiddle. Their brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, children and grandchildren would sing along and dance, too. "Listen to the Mockingbird" was a favorite for many. Gladys and Arlie often played cards with neighbors and family, teaching many young people to play cribbage and whist. She was very competitive, but was a good loser and winner alike, except when she and Arlie played checkers. After Arlie had won many games and she had won none, she refused to play with him again. Gladys loved the countryside in which she lived. She knew the names of many plants and enjoyed the springtime crocuses and knew just where to find them. She loved fall and the harvest time too. When combining started, she could proudly watch the trucks bring in the grain. Her children can also recall lying out under the stars learning the names of the constellations and watching the weather, looking for storms. She and Arlie survived through hail, drought, rust and grasshoppers. They built a farm and a life of which they could be proud. During the years of being a farmer's wife and raising children, Gladys was also dedicated to providing an education to area children as a one-room school teacher. She taught grades one to eight at Norbeck, Southwest and Johnson schools in Harding and Perkins counties. She took this job very seriously and all of her students were very special to her. She was always so proud of their accomplishments and loved to receive cards, letters and wedding and birth announcements. Gladys received her Teacher's Certificate from Black Hills Teachers' College. During her 20 years of teaching, she returned during many summers for additional classes to keep up her certification. Her devotion to children did not end when the school bell rang. Gladys and Arlie also welcomed several of her younger siblings, their nieces and nephews and neighbor children into their home over the years. In their retirement years, Arlie and Gladys spent several years traveling to craft shows in the Dakotas and Montana selling the wheat weavings Arlie made. They worked together just like they always had: he would weave and she would do the packaging and shipping. During these years Gladys and Arlie were able to share many summer vacations with their grandchildren. It was always a treat to visit them at their farm. It was a warm and loving place to be. We all enjoyed playing the game of who would be first to see Gram and Gramps windmill on the hill. Gladys adored her husband and she was deeply in love with him until the day she died, as he was with her. After Arlie was diagnosed with cancer, they moved to an apartment in Hettinger where Gladys cared for him until he passed away in 1991. She never quite got over his death, carrying this sadness all through the later years. Her grief was compounded by the loss of their youngest child, Arlie, Jr. to cancer in 2007. As her health began to fail, Gladys moved to Lemmon, SD to be closer to Patsy and Gillian and her family. Gladys felt fortunate to be cared for by her daughter, granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Bart. Gladys thought the world of him for his kindness toward her and especially the care he gave her. She also treasured living next door to great-grandchildren Colton and Kestrel, who were constantly in and out of her home, sharing their excitement and love. Gladys was very proud of Colt's accomplishments, especially his ability playing the piano. She had a very special bond with Kessie, who was the apple of Great-grandma's eye. Kessie could always get a smile out of her great-grandma. Gladys was a kind and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She worried about everyone and always wanted to make sure each one was well cared for, safe and happy. She took great delight in her family and was always willing to lend whatever help was needed to any of them. Gladys C. Heier went to meet her Savior on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, ND. She was preceded in death by her husband; son Arlie, Jr.; son-in-law Timothy Kochel; her parents, four sisters: Stella Ondrecek, Doris Kronberger, Beverly Hanson, and baby Beverly Elaine; and one brother Charles Knutson. Gladys is survived by her daughter Pat Kochel (special friend Bob Frerking), Lemmon, SD, her son James (Theresa) Heier, Queen Creek, AZ, daughter-in-law Carol Heier (special friend Ray Felton), Stafford, KS; 7 grandchildren Dawn (Bill) Benson, Billings, MT, Michael Kochel, Mott, ND, Gillian (Bart) Damjanovich, Lemmon, SD, Troy (Nicole) Heier, Kansas City, MO, Benton 'B.J.' (special friend Leslie and children Kensington and Kilin)Heier, Galena, KS, James 'J.D.'
