Read More	Gladys Lucille Slippy Bowman, age 96, of Alturas, passed away May 25, 2019 in Sparks, Nevada, where she had lived for the past year and a half in an assisted living residence. Gladys was born March 22, 1923, in Alturas, California, to Elmer and Pearl (Thomas) Slippy, in the home of her grandparents Jack and Lizzie (Fisher) Thomas. The house was right behind the Courthouse on South East Street. When she was two years old, she went to live with her grandparents, until she graduated from Modoc Union High School in 1941. She married the love of her life, Ralph William Bowman, on June 8, 1941, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alturas. She had two wonderful children, Yvonne Harris of Alturas and Walter Bowman of San Francisco. She and Ralph were married 63 years, when he passed away on February 5, 2005. Gladys spent her kindergarten and first six years in the Grammar school on East Street, just two houses from where she was born. The 7th and 8th grades were transferred to the school on Fourth Street, the first time it was used after being built for many years. Then she started her freshman and sophomore years in the old three-story high school, while the new high school in front of it was being built facing Main Street. She attended her junior and senior years there. Gladys started working at the very early age of 13 alongside her mother who got her a job at Griffin Variety Store in Susanville, California during the summer and holidays for two years. Then she worked at Hart’s Five & Dime store in Alturas for two years during the summer and holidays, until she graduated. She went to work at Helm’s Department Store for four years, then worked two years for Mick Jones in his men’s store, until he was drafted in the war. Gladys and Ralph mortgaged their first house on First and Estes Streets in 1947 to start the Modoc Cash Grocery next to Gysin’s Meat Market. They later sold it to Jim Maher and bought the Old Home Bakery from Ben Lange in 1950, at 12th and Main Streets. Working very hard, they opened Bowman’s Market in 1951. They had the store for 27 years. Gladys worked those years alongside Ralph and as soon as their daughter and son were old enough they also worked in the store. Cost efficiency and productivity were important to Gladys and Ralph, so they purchased a truck for Arn Flynn to haul groceries from Sacramento. To this day the building remains and functions as a local grocery store. In 1956 the family moved from First Street to 8th and East B Streets. An active person who loved the outdoors, Gladys' hobbies included camping, deer hunting, and fishing with her family, as well as working in her yard and canning home grown fruits and vegetables. In 1966, Ralph and Gladys bought the ranch on Bowman Road. They raised and sold Black Angus cattle. The family each had their own horse, with two extra for guests. She helped with putting up the hay and best of all for her, driving her tractor. They sold the grocery store in 1976, so they could devote their time to working on the ranch. Family and friends were always important to her. Gladys was active in the community and maintained membership in several social organizations including the Northern Rebekah Lodge, Rebekah Past Noble Grands Club, Rebekah Sewing Circle, Native Daughters of the Golden West receiving her 50-year pin, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Modoc Historical Society, and Farm Bureau Association. From 1965 to 1970, Gladys rode with the Side Saddlers in parades in Reno, Redding, Tulelake, Lakeview, Burns and Cedarville. She also enjoyed the camaraderie in her later years with a lunch group’s weekly outings in Alturas. Gladys and Ralph had Jim Reid, Lovell Ingraham, and Quentin Smith build their cabin at Medicine Lake. A lot of fun was had by family and friends at the cabin over the years. Gladys and Ralph traveled to Canada, Keno Bay in Mexico, Hawaii and many places in the USA such as Nebraska, Arizona, Illinois, South Dakota, Utah, Idaho, Michigan, Washington State, Wyoming, and Oregon. She traveled to all of Ralph’s trap shooting events. Gladys is survived by her daughter, her son, her sister, a granddaughter, a grandson, and four great-grandchildren. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Bowman, mother Pearl Thomas Ring, father Elmer Slippy, brother Leon Slippy and nephew Richard Powers. Services for Gladys Lucille Bowman will be held graveside on June 8, 2019 at 11 a.m. in the Alturas Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Niles Hotel, Alturas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Modoc County Historical Society, or the donor’s choice.
