Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade. Gladys was born on Nov. 4, 1935, on the family farm near Worthington, daughter of Henry and Laura (Becker) Wieferich. She received her education at John's Creek Country School and graduated from St. Paul's High School in Worthington. She married William K. Aitchison on May 28, 1954, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington; he preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1999. She was employed for 13 years at Cascade Sundries. Gladys was a former member of the Dubuque Saddle Club. She participated in many fund drives, had booths at National Night Out, was secretary-treasurer of the Cascade Bicentennial Committee, was a member of the Oak Grove Country Club for 50-plus years and was a member of the Shady Rest Auxiliary and Tri-County Museum. She also volunteered on the cemetery flower committee by putting flowers on forgotten graves since 1985. She donated to the senior citizen's home and was an associate of the UAW Local 94 retirees. Gladys was named an Iowa State 4-H Alumni and received her Diamond 40-year 4-H pin for 41 years of service. Through her 4-H service, she received the Governor's Volunteer Award, four awards from the National Safety Council, was the first to be inducted into the Dubuque County 4-H Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Iowa State Hall of Fame in 2009. Her drive to promote safety through 4-H will be remembered by all she touched. Gladys was known as a seamstress for mending flags, sewing Barbie clothes and making more than 1,500 pairs of mittens for the needy. Her "Magic Wand" was always within reach whenever a costume was needed or an idea needed to come to life. Gladys opened her home up at Christmastime and invited school children to see her extensive village of houses, deer, forest, Nativity scene and numerous holiday displays that she set up every Christmas season for everybody to enjoy. Surviving are her three children, Neil (Wendy) Aitchison, of Asbury, Joy (Charlie) Bacon, of Hopkinton, and Keith (Mary Ann) Aitchison, of Cascade; 10 grandchildren, Shawna (Tim) Colvin, Michael, Mark and Nichole Aitchison, Rick (Wendi), Randy (Brooke), Andrew and Amy Bacon, Jesse and Alex Aitchison; and four great-grandchildren, Jack, Riley, Adrian and Caleb.
