Charles Huffman, aged 39, occupied the pulpit of the church of the United Brethren in Christ of East Palestine, Ohio and won the admiration of his parishioners by his vigorous denunciations of evil. Then his wife went away on a visit and the minister was invited to the home of a member of his flock. There he fell in love with the daughter of the family, Gladys Marie Overlander, aged 17 and the romance progressed. Easter Sunday Rev. Huffman electrified his congregation by announcing his resignation. That night unknown to his wife or friends, he left for Pittsburg, where he met Miss Overlander and the couple sought by the nation’s police, began a pilgrimage that ended here Wednesday when they were arrested. “I know I trespassed,” said Rev Huffman after his arrest, “but I fell almost before I knew it. And then to escape the scandal that we knew must break about our heads. Gladys and I decided to go away. It was all my fault, Gladys is pure and innocent, but we loved one another so. I hope it can be arranged to send her back to her people. She has sinned not so much as she has been sinned against.” The couple were apprehended by means of a letter written by Huffman to East Palestine. They were found to be living together as Mr. and Mrs. Charles Huff, at 1131 Lincoln St.. Huffman told his landlord that he and the girl were married in June. Huffman arrived in Denver with the girl about three weeks ago and secured employment as a laborer. He told the police he was a graduate of Buchtel College, Akron, Ohio. After leaving college he supported himself by working as an engineer until he was admitted to the ministry. His three years at East Palestine were “fruitful,” he said, and he was expecting an appointment to a more remunerative parish when he became involved with Miss Overlander. Rev. Huffman pleaded not guilty when he was given a hearing before United States Commissioner Stone the day following his arrest under the Mann act. He was unable to furnish the required bond of $1,500 and was taken back to jail after the hearing. Chief of Police John Faulkner of East Palestine was the principal witness against Huffman. He told how members of the latter’s congregation went to him in April and expressed a fear that Huffman would elope with the girl. He said that a day or two later the little town was rocked from center to circumference when it was learned that the pair has disappeared. He tracked them, he said, to Pittsburg, St. Louis, Kansas City and finally to Denver. ---------------------------------------------- GIRL GIVE UP MINISTER (The Pittsburgh Press 14 May 1917) Miss Overlander has promised to have no further relations with the minister and has departed with Faulkner for her home in East Palestine. She was not permitted to see reporters before her departure. Huffman’s mind was probably filled with thoughts of the elopement, according to his confession to the police, when he arranged his farewell sermon which he delivered to his congregation in the Ohio village Easter Sunday. His text was part of the nineteenth chapter of Leviticus, reading: “And whosoever taketh a woman that is a bondmaid, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she is not free. And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the Lord, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.” “I would much prefer being tried in East Palestine,” Huffman told the police. “It was in that city that I first sinned in the eyes of the state and to comply fully with the Bible, and the text of my last sermon to my congregation. I want to make my trespass offering at the very door of my tabernacle.” The trail will probably be heard in the Federal court in Pittsburg.
