Gladys Rosella McDowell, age 94 of Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Francis Lee and Clara Holda [Krug] Myers, was born June 16, 1911 at Stafford, Kansas. She died at Calvin Manor care Center in Des Moines on Friday, January 13, 2006. Gladys graduated from Garden Grove High School. She taught country school in Decatur County. On October 31, 1930 she married Samuel Deane McDowell. Four children were born to this union, stillborn Deane Jr., Shirley, Sharon, and Larry. Gladys and Dean farmed south of Woodland, Iowa. she attended and taught Sunday School at the Woodland Community Church. In 1969 they retired and moved into Leon, Iowa. To be closer to their children, they moved to Waukee, Iowa in 1979. While there, Gladys attended the Christian Church. Dean died in 1992. In 1999 Gladys moved into Calvin Manor. Gladys loved her family and enjoyed helping Dean on the farm. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Dean; a son; a grandson; and sister Grace Dyer. Survivors include her children: Shirley McDougal and husband Dale; Sharon Hutchison and husband Ron, all of Urbandale, Iowa; and Larry McDowell and wife Gayle of Kirksville, Missouri; seven grandchildren: Jeanne Gerhardt, Connie Newville, Debra Butte, Ronda Stumberg, Renae Hutchison, Brad McDowell, and Curtis McDowell; nine great grandchildren: Matthew, Katelyn, Carter, Davis, Kailey, Ashley, Mallory, Jacob and Samuel; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
