Description	:	Gladys S. Wilkinson, 87, died Feb. 26, 2000 after a long struggle with heart and lung problems. She was born Sue Gladys Nickles on Nov. 13, 1912 in the house her father built at Plain, near Lake Wenatchee, to Robert E. and Mary (Odell) Nickles. Read More	Gladys S. Wilkinson, 87, died Feb. 26, 2000 after a long struggle with heart and lung problems. She was born Sue Gladys Nickles on Nov. 13, 1912 in the house her father built at Plain, near Lake Wenatchee, to Robert E. and Mary (Odell) Nickles. In 1899, when both were around 17 years old, Mary was the teacher at a one-room school at Malaga and Robert was a student. He was working at the time for board and room for a Malaga area rancher, Joe Miller. They were married in 1909. The second of five children, Gladys was deeply affected at age nine by the death of her mother, due to complications from the birth of the youngest brother. Her mother left her an appreciation for good music and a good example for such a young child. The children attended the one-room school at Lake Wenatchee where their father was a well-known Forest Ranger. He was also a carpenter and built many buildings including a log house still in use at Winton, a fire lookout on Dirtyface Mountain, Rock Creek Guard Station and a bridge over the Wenatchee River. Gladys often spoke about their happy times as well as hardships growing up in the woods, hiking up Dirtyface Mountain and swimming in the cold lake. Gladys graduated from Leavenworth High School in June of 1930. In October of 1930, she married L.H. ("Hank") McCamey. They made their home in Wenatchee and their son, Marvin W. McCamey, was born Sept. 12, 1932. They were divorced in 1944. Gladys attended business college in Wenatchee and worked a few years at Sears Roebuck in the ‘40s. On Dec. 6, 1945, she and Howard B. Wilkinson were married. Their son, Forrest M. Wilkinson, was born Sept. 5, 1946. Howard and Gladys had an orchard at Sunnyslope until 1954, when they tried dairy farming at Riverside in Okanogan County. In 1957, they moved to the East Wenatchee area and owned an orchard until retirement in 1976. Gladys and Howard enjoyed gardening, pinochle with friends, traveling, trailer camping and their grandchildren. She was an active member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist; a member of the East Wenatchee Grange where she held several posts and recently received a 50-year membership recognition; and Delta Pho chapter of Alpha Iota business sorority for over 55 years. She is survived by her son, Marvin McCamey of Wenatchee; her son and daughter-in-law, Forrest and Nancy Louise Wilkinson of Seattle; her grandchildren, Donald McCamey, Michael McCamey, Valerie King, Amanda Quaid and Christine Wilkinson; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard in 1987, brother, Edwin Forrest Nickles in France in W.W. II, sister, Della Bryant and twin brothers, Robert and Marion Nickles. Service of commemoration will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 3, 2000 at Betts Memorial Chapel with interment following at the Sunnyslope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to programs involved with alcohol awareness, such as D.A.R.E. and M.A.D.D., or charities of your choice. Services are under the care of Betts Funeral Service.
