Description	:	Gladys Sylvia Martha Natvig was born Feb. 14, 1918 to Her-man and Elizabeth (Linnemann) Drewelow, the fourth child in a family of 11 children. The family farmed near Boyd, Iowa, in Chickasaw County. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Boyd. She attended school through the eighth grade, but due to frequent illness was deemed not strong enough to attend high school. The family farmed near Boyd, Iowa, in Chickasaw County. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Boyd. She attended school through the eighth grade, but due to frequent illness was deemed not strong enough to attend high school. She began work in homes, caring for families and bedfast mothers with newborn babies, as was the tradition at the time. She married Carlyle E. Natvig June 18, 1937 at St. John's Lu-theran Church, Boyd. They farmed their entire married life on a Natvig family farm in northern Chickasaw County, near the community of Saude. To this un-ion, four children were born: Carol Mae Malek (deceased); Jean Ann Forde, Vern Carl Natvig and Mark Carlyle Natvig. She was well known for her abundant flowers about the farm and house yards, plus her enormous strawberry patch and garden. Her ability to raise ducks, geese and chickens, processing them for gifts to family and friends, as well as selling oven ready birds to others, was well known in the community. As at home on a tractor as she was in the house, family members fondly recall her tremendous cooking skills and special treats. She kindly and lovingly cared for children and calves, while manag-ing all the farm bookkeeping. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren spent time with her. She managed to feed all who came – expected or not. This tiny woman, always clad in jeans, was small but mighty. Gladys Natvig was a faithful member of the Saude Lutheran congregation, serving the Ladies Aid Association in various offices over the years. She also assisted her husband with bookkeeping in the offices he held at church. Gladys Drewelow Natvig was preceded in death by her husband, Carlyle, of 66 years; daughter Carol Malek; her parents; sisters Leonore Schuchardt, Bernice O'Chala and Eileen Bernard; brothers Robert Drewelow and Oliver (in infancy).
